How to Replace the Battery in Your DSC PowerSeries PC1616, PC1832 and PC1864 Home Security System

A trouble signal will be displayed by the Trouble light remaining ON until the problem is fixed. To see the type of trouble condition, press (*)(2) and watch for the zone light indicating a low system battery to come on.

When your system keypad produces a low battery warning, the emergency backup battery in the control panel is low and needs to be recharged or replaced.

If the power in your home goes out, the security system will shut down if the battery is below the operating level. When the power in the home is restored, the panel recharges the battery.

However, if the warning remains on the display more than 48 hours after the power is restored, the battery needs to be replaced.

You can replace the battery yourself, saving you time and money. The process requires the removal of two wires from the old battery and reconnecting them to the same posts on your new battery.

We will walk you through every task in replacing your security system’s backup battery. Please make sure you read all of the instructions before beginning.

Buying a replacement battery

UPS Battery Center carries a full line of Alarm Batteries, including the DSC Alarm Systems DSC BD7-12 12V 7.2Ah Replacement Battery which is the replacement battery for your DSC PowerSeries Home Security System.

Locate the control panel box

The battery control box is usually located inside a closet, garage or attic. Note: the control panel box is not to be confused with the panel keypad which is used to arm and disarm the security system.

Installing Replacement Battery

Put your system on test

When you receive your replacement battery, put the system on test.

Locate and open the control panel box

Open the control panel box by removing the screws on the side and bottom of the cover, or with the panel control box key.

Disconnect the battery

  1. Pull the black wire’s connector from the negative (-) battery terminal. The connector may need to be slightly wiggled to loosen and disconnect it. Use pliers with electrically insulated handles, to avoid receiving a shock.
  2. Repeat the process to remove the red wire’s connector from the positive (+) battery terminal.
  3. Remove the old battery from the control panel box. Make sure you don’t touch any metal objects to the terminals on the battery or to the open end of the black and red wire connectors.

Installing the new battery

Place the new battery inside the control panel box.

  1. If there are plastic terminal protectors on the replacement battery, remove them before connecting the wires to the battery.
  2. Connect the red wire to the (+) positive terminal of the new battery by pushing the connector firmly onto the terminal.
  3. Connect the black wire to the (-) negative terminal of the new battery by pushing the connector firmly onto the terminal.

Check for low battery signal

Check the alarm keypad and see if it still displays a BAT or SYSTEM LO BAT message. If the message is still displayed, the new battery may need to recharge. If you are still receiving the message 48 hours after installing the new battery, call your monitoring centre and ask them for the trouble light reset code. They will gladly provide it.

Test your system

When the BAT or SYSTEM LO BAT message is no longer displayed on the keypad, test the security system to make sure that it is working properly by placing it on test and triggering an alert, by opening a door or window that is monitored.

Secure the control panel box

Close the control panel door by replacing the screws or locking the door.

Take the system off test

Remove the system from test.

Recycle your old battery

Properly dispose of your old battery. You can find a battery recycler in your area by visiting call2recycle.org/locator. It is free of charge to return a lead-acid battery to a recycler listed on this site and will ensure that it is being recycled according to all applicable regulatory requirements.
